The arts of Australia tended to be strongly imitative ( 模仿) of European forms until late in the
19th century, when a new Australian culture began to emerge (出现) that reflected the lives of the
settlers. Leading contemporary (当代)writers include Patrick White, who won the 1973 Nobel Prize for literature, and
Mrs, L. C. Rodd, who wrote under the pen names of Kylie Tennant, Morris West, George
Johnston, etc.
In music some Australian artists have achieved international renown.
The most famous of all was the singer Dame Nellie Melba (1861?/FONT>1931). Today, musical activity is encouraged by the Australian
