Preparing for the Next Century

As the world is moving into the 21st century, people have beenobsessed with trying to understand what the future of our planet may looklike in the next century.Despite all the scientific development we haveachieved, I still believe minkind will confront a series of challenges.

First of all, the problem of a rising world population shouldattract our attention. The population on the earth is rapidly increasingwhile food and other commodities can't keep pace with these increases. In the coming century, the most important thing we should deal with isthat mankind should always keep in mind that we can't go on expanding humanpopulation without plan and we must take urgent measures to get it undercontrol.

The second problem we are facing in the 21st century is preservingthe environment.Environment means the land, water and atmosphere we liveby. We must realize that we have only one earth. We must take immediatemeasures to fight against all kinds of pollution. Preserving the environmentis preserving not only our home but also civilization of the human community.

In the 21stcentury , it can be anticipated that knowledge andinformation will expand at a high rate. The industrial era of mankind willbe over and a new world, a new society order, a new system will be emergingon the world. When the 21st century arrives, knowledge and informationwill replace old industrial commodities production. An era of informationwill come to the earth. In the future, human society will be characterizedby processes in which telecommunications and computers are strategic.Ifmodern society was characterized by a focus on more effective use of mechanicallabour, then in the 21st century, postmodern society will be characterizedby increasing reliance on technical knowledge, information and computers. We have solid evidence to support this.

In the US, almost half the work force was engaged in informationproduction and contribution as early as 1962. By 1990, the figure had grownto an astounding 75percent. This development has profound implicationsfor the entire world. To catch up with the advanced countries, the youthof china should learn the new knowledge and information. In the 21st century, economic competition will be more intense and cruel. In this battle newknowledge and skills are of the utmost importance. They are our competitivepower in the future.

I believe in the 21st century, there will be both challengeand opportunity. Let's meet the new century with all the courage and confidencein our hearts.
