When I was back to Beijing from Jiangxi where I
went to attend the unveiling ceremony of an museumon Red Army's 70th
anRitersary, there was a pile nf photns on my desk sent by Mr. Shiyanzhang,
aChinese photographer from Huzhou nf Zhejiang Provice. The Times Publishing
House is gning to print hiscnlrection and asks me to write a preface
for him. l' m so glad to accept it for such a famousphotographer.
I got to kaow him on one of his prizegiving ceremon}' in Beijing.
Till now he has won a Int of kindsof prizes, such as the nrst prize
in national photngraphy competition, the best prize, The Chinese excellentphotography
prize, the prominent prize nf the five "First" and the best prize
of Chinese photographytreatise. He pa}'s particular attention tn the
structure and light and is good at putting the natural light, skadow,
colour, line and other photographic factnrs tngether intn an united
and harmouious artistic iluage.Whnever sees his pictures will surely
be deeply impressed. Because nf his remarkable ackievements, the artcommittee
and judge committee of China International Celebrities Institute has
awarded him the honorablecertificate of "Great Coutributions, Outstanding
Achievements" , China Pkotographer Assiciation alsnawarded him an
hnnnrable title on its 40' s founding anniversary. I' m really enchanted
by his post, These calnrful, changeable pattern pictures are so charming, impressive
and meaningful that nnt nnly bring us a feeling of freshness and enjoyment
but also expressa strong passinn for our great times and reaect penple'
s tnve for the country. He can discnver anddisplay the beauty from
the ordinary life, even the very tiuy details of it can be developed
into a strongtide of patriotism in his camera, iust like what people
comment on Willtam Folknare, the American writer"He can express a
great times on a stamp-sized space". We can read lots of patrntic
poems in lettersnowdays, but it is seldnm tn see phntos showing tke
same feelings. Mr. Shi has been living by the Taihu Lake for mnre
than thirty years. Sn most of his works are focusedon this southern
picturesque land. When we admire kis gorgeous world composed of natural
scenery andfigures, we can hardly neglect his inspiration, acute e}'esight,
secenity, diligeney and sweat. I worship aman with such strong sensibilities
and the indomitable will. As a well-known photographer, his wnrks
hav'e shared a characteristic style in its artistry, appreciationand
ideology. The series photos of "Red is the east, Rises the Sun" are
nne nf the examples. Thechangeable lights and sizes of the rising
sun renect a law nf natural and besides the earthshakingmomentiom
the pictures produce themselves, they exactl}' s}'mblise the development
nf China and fullyexpress our lol'e and respect for the great leaders
nf each histnrical periods. "Mother" combines theimposing Great Wall
and the national nag with figures to show vividly the theme by cnntrast,
that is: Iregard our motherland as mother. In picture "Seeking Forward",
we can see clearly that the red tidemeans the bright future of our
countr)' and the river stands for the long history. This photo hasrepresented
our nation's voice: our firm belief for the promising future, our
thnusands of year's seekingfor tke wonderful world and someday we
can ha\'e what we have never dreamed of today. His words are ingeniously
conceived. A senic spot or some ordinarp items can be became extrordinaryones,
in "The Foundation of the Republic" He fncused on nnthing but a group
of stnne carving, of therevolutionary martyrs. The mnscularr lines
make penple aware that our happy life is brought by theiryaung, energetic
lives. He knnws how' to crerte a very important social tkeme by what
we see everywhere.Such examples can be frequently seen in kis pictures.
That's what the artists seek in their lifelong time. His w.orks show
a consummate skill. He can freely put back light and side light to
gnod uses andproduce perfect aHistic effects. Everyone knows it is
nneasy tn catch the rare light and shadnlv in thenature, Tn Mr. Shi,
nn matter in warm, sunny weather nr in cold, snowy days, he is often
out in the dimlight and back till midnight and that makes his pictures
extrordinary marvellous full of spitirs, such as"A Fine View nf the
Reservior " "A Superb View" "Gnlden Wave " "Silt'er Wave" and so on.
In"Housing Project", the first is half hazy half clear, the secend
is peaceful and quiet, the third is cnlorfuland magnificent. His different
ways to treat phntos mean to shnw the people in the countryside have
livedin a happy and rlch life since our reform and tke open policy.
"Lotus" is another example. At a firstglance, it' s too cnmmon, but
under the function of light and shadow, it turns out to be similar
to asplashed-ink painting by a certain ancient painter in Ming Dpnasty.
At the same time, the ptcture teachesns what kind of the moral character
we shnuld have. His anotker pieture "Fisking Songs" is slteciallytreated
in the darkroom, and it has the same effect as a print. AII of the
above compeletely show hischaracteritics and styles in the photo creatinn
and his skillful special treament in the darkroom, and showhis talent
on the aesthetic concinusness, life experience and artistic accomplishment
as well. It is late autumn in Beijing now, a seasnn nf hartest. I
congradulate him nn what he kas achieved. andlook fnrward to seeing
more and more his photos. I'm sure he will cnnstantly bring the beauty
to peopleand serve nur country. |
